Branch Player of the Season Award 2005 - 2006 - Nicky Southall (Midfield)

A vastly experienced midfielder who turned down the chance to join two Championship clubs to become Gary Megson's first signing of the 2005 summer. Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday had wanted to secure Southall's signature on a free transfer from Gillingham but he opted instead for a move to The City Ground, signing a two-year contract. Southall, who can play in the centre or right of midfield as well as a right wing back, started his career with Hartlepool and after a spell with Grimsby, he joined Gillingham in December 1997. After establishing himself as a key figure at Priestfield - and a cult figure in the eyes of the Gillingham supporters - he clinched a move into the Premiership with Bolton. He made 18 League appearances for Sam Allardyce's side before joining Norwich on loan. Southall returned to Gillingham for a second spell with the Kent club in December 2002 and wasted no time in re-establishing himself on the first team scene.

The clear winner this season. After a relegation scare, Forest managed to keep their Division 1 (renamed The Championship) status. The Republic of Ireland left-sided midfielder stayed with Forest, before finally completing a switch to Tottenham Hotspur (with Michael Dawson) in January 2005. Scored 25 goals in 160 first-team appearances for Forest after signing on as a trainee at the City Ground and turning professional in August 1999.

Branch Player of the Season Award 2002 - 2003 - David Johnson (Striker)

Forest lose out in the play-off semi-finals to Sheffield United. Signed from Ipswich Town (January 2001), Jamaican born Johnson struck up a brilliant partnership with Marlon Harewood during the 2002/3 season. Johnson scored 27 League & Cup goals - plus 2 in the play-offs - to finish top scorer. He also won the overall NFFC Player of the Year award for this season. He never seemed to recover from a bad leg-break in the 2003/4 season and went to Sheffield United (loan) during March 2005.

Branch Player of the Season Award 2001 - 2002 - David Prutton (Midfield)

Branch Player of the Season Award 2000 - 2001 - Chris Bart-Williams (Midfield)

Forest finish 11th with Chris Bart-Williams top scorer (14 goals). Joined the Reds from Sheffield Wednesday in a £2.5 million deal in summer 1995. David Platt played Rogers in midfield during his first year in charge, and the Liverpool-born player rewarded him by finishing joint top scorer with Dougie Freedman. Branch Player of the Season Award 1998 - 1999 - Dave Beasant (Goal Keeper)

Forest finish last in the Premier League (again) and go straight back down. The veteran goalkeeper raised a few eyebrows when Dave Bassett plucked him from Southampton reserves in August 1997 to solve a goalkeeping crisis. Went on to claim the number one spot at Forest beating off competition from Switzerland and Welsh international goalkeepers Marco Pascolo and Mark Crossley. Signed from: Southampton, January 1998 (on loan from August 1997). Released July 2001.

Branch Player of the Season Award 1997 - 1998 - Pierre van Hooijdonk

Division One Champions & promoted (Dave Bassett manager). Van Hooijdonk joined Forest in March 1997 for a club record £4 million from Celtic where he was top scorer. His arrival at Forest however could not stop them from being relegated in his first season with the club. In Division One however, Van Hooijdonk really made a name for himself, scoring many goals, most notably from free kicks. However, despite achieving promotion, the Forest board refused to buy any new players and instead sold stars such as Kevin Campbell and Colin Cooper. Dismayed by such a lack of ambition, Van Hooijdonk refused to come back to pre season training Forest and instead led a strike against the club, remaining in his native country of Holland. After weeks of argument, Van Hooijdonk eventually came back to the club where he played the rest of the season before being sold to Vitesse Arnheim for £3.5 million.

He enjoyed similar popularity as an England player, always willing to lead from the front and wear his heart on his sleeve.
