The Irishman represented his country at football and rugby and was also a national athletics champion. After his playing days O'Flanagan spent 22 years as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
Older Arsenal fans will remember O'Flanagan as a talented amateur footballer at Highbury. The marauding winger signed for the Club from Bohemians after relocating to London to practice as a doctor. He scored 18 goals in the post-war season of 1945/46.
The pressures of his medical practice forced O'Flanagan to end his Arsenal career in 1948 but he returned to the English league with Brentford the following year.
He passed away on Friday, May 26 2006at the age of 87.
